Getting Started
What's the best age for my child to start music lessons?
Most children are ready for private lessons around age 5–6. Every child develops differently, but we look for the ability to focus for 30 minutes, a genuine interest in music, and basic fine motor coordination. During your free trial lesson, we’ll assess readiness together and let you know honestly whether the timing is right. When in doubt, come try — there’s no obligation.
How do I know which instrument is right for my child?
We offer a ‘Try an Instrument’ program specifically for this! Your child can explore piano, guitar, drums, violin, saxophone, and more with one of our specialist teachers before making any commitment. Piano and guitar are the most popular starting points for young children, but the best instrument is the one your child is excited about. We’ll guide you based on their interests, personality, and physical readiness.
Do you offer a trial lesson before we commit?
Yes — every new student starts with a FREE trial lesson. It’s a real lesson with a qualified teacher, not just a meet-and-greet. We want you and your child to experience the quality of our instruction firsthand, meet the teacher, and feel completely comfortable before making any decisions. No pressure, no obligation.
My child has never touched an instrument. Is that okay?
Absolutely — that’s exactly who we’re here for! All of our programs are designed to meet students exactly where they are. Our teachers are experienced with true beginners of all ages and know how to make the very first lesson exciting, confidence-building, and fun.
Do you teach adults too?
Yes! We welcome adult students of all levels — from complete beginners finally pursuing a childhood dream to former musicians returning after years away. Adult students are invoiced monthly on a flexible schedule. It’s never too late to start, and our teachers love working with motivated adults.
Our Teachers
Are your teachers qualified?
All of our teachers hold at least an undergraduate degree in music, performance, or an education-related field. Some have advanced degrees as well. Every instructor brings an extensive resume of professional performances and real teaching experience, and each one has a personal, dedicated interest in your child’s musical growth.
How do you match my child with a teacher?
We take the match seriously. We consider your child’s age, personality, learning style, instrument goals, and the teaching strengths of each instructor. Some students thrive with a very structured classical approach; others need a more playful, creative teacher. We get it right — and if you ever feel the match isn’t working, we’ll find a better fit.
What makes your teachers different from other music schools?
Our faculty aren’t just skilled musicians — they’re devoted educators. Every teacher at PW has a personal, dedicated interest in your child’s musical development. We don’t hire teachers who are ‘good enough.’ We hire people who are genuinely passionate about teaching and about the Piano Workshop’s values: fostering a lifelong love of music.
Can I sit in on my child's lesson?
Yes, especially for young beginners! Parent involvement in the first several lessons can be very helpful. For older students, many teachers prefer one-on-one time to build a focused working relationship — but we always encourage you to check in with the teacher about what works best for your child.
Lessons & Scheduling
What lesson lengths do you offer?
We offer 30-minute, 45-minute, and 60-minute weekly private lessons. For young beginners (ages 5–7), 30 minutes is typically ideal. As students advance, longer lessons allow for deeper work on technique, theory, and repertoire. Your teacher will advise on the right length as your child grows.
Do you offer online/virtual lessons?
Yes — virtual lessons are a permanent part of what we offer, available via Zoom, FaceTime, Google Meet, or Skype. Many families love the convenience, and our teachers are fully experienced with online instruction. Same expert teachers, same curriculum, just from home. Virtual lessons are available year-round.
What happens if my child misses a lesson?
During the fall and spring semesters, we allow up to two cancellations and two make-up lessons per semester. Make-up lessons must be taken within the same semester — they cannot carry over. We ask for 24 hours’ notice for any cancellation. Please see our full semester policies for details.
What are your studio hours?
We offer lessons on weekdays and weekends. Exact availability depends on teacher schedules. The studio does not keep set open hours — it is open for scheduled lessons only. Students should arrive no more than 5 minutes before their lesson and be picked up no more than 5 minutes after.
Do you offer in-home lessons?
Yes, in-home lessons are available on a limited basis, depending on teacher availability and scheduling. There is an additional fee for in-home instruction. Contact us to find out if in-home lessons are available for your area and preferred instrument.
What happens during school breaks and holidays?
During our fall and spring semesters, the only holidays we close for are Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. If your lesson falls on any other holiday and you choose not to attend (with 24 hours’ notice), it will count as one of your two permitted cancellations. Summer programs run on a separate flexible schedule.
Tuition & Payments
How does tuition work?
During the academic year, tuition is semester-based. Full pricing, payment options, and registration details are available in our Studio Policies & Registration section. We’re also happy to walk you through everything when you come in for your free trial lesson.
Do you require a long-term contract?
Our lessons run on a semester basis during the academic year. If you need to discontinue lessons mid-semester, we require a one-month written notice. Summer lessons are offered on a more flexible schedule. Full details are in our Studio Policies.
Where can I find full pricing details?
Complete tuition rates, registration fees, payment options, and policies are available on our Studio Policies & Registration page. You can also call or email us and we’ll send you everything you need.
Practice & Progress
How much should my child practice at home?
For younger children (ages 5–8), even 15–20 minutes of daily practice makes a significant difference. Older and more advanced students typically benefit from 30–45 minutes per day. Your teacher will set specific practice goals and guide you on how to support practice at home in a positive, productive way.
Do we need to own a piano or instrument at home?
Yes — regular practice at home is essential for progress. For piano students, we offer a convenient rental program if you’re not ready to purchase an instrument. For other instruments, your teacher will recommend affordable starter options. We never want cost to be a barrier — let’s talk about what works for your family.
How long before my child can play real songs?
Most students can play recognizable simple songs within their first few months. Progress depends on age, natural aptitude, and how consistently they practice at home. Our teachers set small, achievable goals so students feel successful early and stay motivated. You’ll be amazed at what they can do by their first recital.
What if my child wants to quit?
It’s completely normal for students to go through phases of lower motivation — especially around 6–12 months in. Our teachers are experienced at reigniting enthusiasm through new music, fresh challenges, and keeping the fun factor high. We’d always rather work through it with you than lose a student. That said, if music truly isn’t the right fit, we understand — and there’s no judgment.
Do you hold recitals?
Yes! We hold student recitals twice a year. Recitals are a wonderful opportunity for students to experience performing in a supportive, encouraging environment. They’re a huge confidence builder and one of the highlights of the year for students and families alike. Participation is encouraged for all students.
Do you offer any achievement programs?
Yes — we participate in several recognized programs: National Piano Guild Auditions (private adjudication with detailed written feedback for all ages); Music Educators Association (MEA) evaluations (Bronze, Silver, and Gold NFSM pins for 3, 5, 7, and 10 years of study); ABRSM Exams (internationally recognized structured assessments that provide progressive goals and objective measurement of musical progress); and the Music Fest Rising Talents International Festival (adjudicated auditions with signed evaluations, commentary, and opportunities to perform in the Winner Circle Concert Series or Virtual Recital).
